THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON RECONSTRUCTION AND REPROGRAMMING OF ONE OF THE MOST CENTRALLY LOCATED BUILDINGS IN THE CITY OF KUMANOVO. ERECTED AS A CINEMA AND CULTURAL CENTER, THE BUILDING USED TO BE A MAJOR CULTURAL ATTRACTOR FOR THE PUBLIC SQUARES OF THE CITY. THE POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL TRANSITION IN THE EARLY 1990S REFLECTED ON THE BUILT INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE CITIES TOO. CONSEQUENTLY, THE DAMAR BUILDING WENT THROUGH A SLOW PROCESS OF DEROGATION IN THE PROGRAM AND USERS DOMAIN. TODAY, UTILIZING THE MIX USE PATTERN OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT, THE BUILDING IS UNDERGOING THOROUGH REMODELING.

THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE EXISTENT INTERIOR FOR THE PROPOSED LOCATION ON THE CENTRAL SQUARE IN KUMANOVO ANTICIPATES FULL CONVERSION OF THE PLACE INTO CONTEMPORARY FLOWER GALLERY AND HORTICULTURAL DESIGN STUDIO. WITHIN THE GIVEN AREA OF 65M2, THE PROJECT WILL ACCOMMODATE VENDING SPACE, WORKSHOP AND STUDIO. THE DESIGN APPROACH IS DUAL: THE SPATIAL ORGANIZATION RESEMBLES AN EXHIBITION SPACE WHILE AT THE SAME TIME IT CORRESPONDS WITH THE ALREADY GIVEN PROGRAM.

THE PROJECT FOR THE URBAN REGENERATION OF THE PROPOSED AREA ASSUMES A STRATEGY CONSTRAINED BY THE LOCAL CONDITIONS AND DERIVED ON A TRIPARTITE MORPHOLOGICAL PLATFORM. IT STARTS WITH AN APPROACH OF IN-FILLS AND VOIDS, WHERE EMPTINESS IS AN URBAN ELEMENT OF PRIMARY SIGNIFICANCE AND MAIN URBAN DESIGN TOOL. FURTHER ON, IT UTILIZES THE ZIGZAG, LOW RISE HOUSING TYPOLOGY TO PROVIDE SEQUENTIAL AND NON-REPETITIVE SERIES OF EXPERIENCES. FINALLY, IT ENDS WITH A GRADUAL REDUCTION OF THE DENSITY BY PROVISION OF SUBURBAN HOUSING SCHEMES.

THIS COMPETITION ENTRY FOR THE GRONINGEN EUROPAN SITE UTILIZES THE INTERDEPENDENCY OF FORM AND CONTENT IN DESIGNING A COMPACT URBAN LANDSCAPE. THE DESIGN RELIES ON THE “DIGITALIZED” SCHEMES OF BANDS THAT CREATE ACTIVE LANDSCAPE, WHICH FURTHER ON, PROVIDE SERVICES ON DIFFERENT LEVELS. SUCH AN ARRANGEMENT APPEARS TO BE RIGID IN STRUCTURE WHILE FLEXIBLE IN CONTENT; IT IS CAPABLE OF PLOTTING METAPOLITAN PATTERN OF LIFE, WHERE COEXISTENCE OF EVENTS, RELATIONSHIPS ON PROGRAMMATIC AND TIME FRAME LEVEL IS ELEMENTAL AND ESSENTIAL TO PROVIDE DIVERSITY.

CITIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, SUCH AS INDIA, FUELLED BY THE STRONG ECONOMY PRODUCE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL SEGREGATION. WITHIN THESE CITIES, LIVING IN SPRAWLED SETTLEMENTS IS А MATTER OF SOCIAL STATUS; THE PUBLIC DOMAIN IS INCREASINGLY DIMINISHED AS OPPOSED TO THE GROWING PRIVATE ESTATES; DIVERSITY IS MARGINALIZED, WHILE THE IDENTITY OF PLACE IS BEING LOST. AS A SOLUTION FOR THESE SOCIAL ILLS, PETER CALTHORPE SUGGESTS AN AMALGAM OF TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY, WHERE COMMUNITIES ARE BASED ON MIX–USE, WALKABLE DISTANCES AND USE OF MASS TRANSIT AS A SPINE OF SUCH DEVELOPMENT.

THE COMPETITION ENTRY OF TAJFA ARCHITECTS FOR THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING OF THE MUNICIPALITY KARPOŠ WITH ITS PHYSICAL ARTICULATION UNOBTRUSIVELY FITS INTO THE EXISTING PHYSICAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, IN THAT WAY ESTABLISHING COMMUNICATION WITH THE SURROUNDING TISSUE. BECAUSE OF THE MASSIVENESS OF THE BUILDING’S PROJECTED VOLUME AND IN THE CONTINUATION OF THE PREVIOUS ORGANIZATIONAL RASTER OF THE MUNICIPALITY’S BUILDING, THE CONSTRUCTION IS DIVIDED INTO THREE FUNCTIONAL ʺSTRIPESʺ. EACH STRIPE HAS A DIFFERENT WIDTH DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF THE PROGRAM /CAPACITY/ THAT SHOULD BE PLACED WITHIN THE SAME.

THE HOUSE OF CRAFTSMEN IN KUMANOVO IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARKS OF THE CITY. THE BUILDING ITSELF HAS A PARTICULAR SYMBOLIC MEANING TO THE CITY, AS IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE PLANNED URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY, AS WELL AS THE ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE EARLY XX CENTURY.
THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BUILDING IS HAPPENING 80 YEARS AFTER ITS CONSTRUCTION AND REPRESENTS HOMAGE TO THE CITY’S ENGINEER OF THE 30S - VLADIMIR ANTONOV.

FLANKED BETWEEN SEVERAL BALKAN METROPOLITAN REGIONS, THERE IS A GROUP OF SO-CALLED CITIES IN-BETWEEN THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED DEVELOPMENT IN RATHER CONFLICTIVE ENVIRONMENT. THESE CITIES ARE NEITHER LARGE NOR SMALL; NEITHER GLOBAL, NOR LOCAL; NEITHER FULLY CONNECTED, NOR MARGINAL, WHICH MAKES THEIR STATUS FAIRLY AMBIGUOUS. BEING SUCH URBAN AGGLOMERATION, THE METROPOLITAN REGION OF SKOPJE EMBODIES THE “FIGHT” OF THE EUROPEAN MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES TO GET A FAIR PLACE IN THE REGIONAL AND GLOBAL URBAN SYSTEM. MANY STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT CRUCIAL PREROGATIVE IN ACHIEVING THIS OBJECTIVE IS MAINTAINING STRONG BOND BETWEEN THE ECONOMY AND THE URBAN PLANNING. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE TWO ASPECTS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TWO-WAY, CAUSE – CONSEQUENCE INTERPLAY, WHICH DEPICTS THE UPS AND DOWNS OF ANY SOCIETY. THEREFORE, THE AIM OF THIS THESIS IS EXAMINING THE PROSPECTS OF SKOPJE TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN A STABLE AND PROGRESSIVE KNOWLEDGE BASED ECONOMY THAT WILL IMMANENTLY REFLECT ON THE QUALITY OF URBAN PLANNING. THE END OF THE LAST CENTURY AND THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW ONE WERE MARKED BY THE CITIES UNSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PATTERN AND THE URGENT NEED FOR CHANGE. NUMEROUS NATIONAL DOCUMENTS AND POLICIES THAT WERE ADOPTED, DEMANDED REAL CHANGES IN EVERY SECTOR POLICIES AMONG WHICH IN THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR. IN RESULT, THE CITIES WORLDWIDE STARTED MODERNIZING AND REORGANIZING THEIR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASING URBAN POPULATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NEW IMPERATIVE- SUSTAINABILITY, FROM AN ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AS WELL AS ENVIRONMENTAL VIEWPOINT. FOLLOWING THE OVER-ENCOMPASSING GOAL TO JOIN THE EU, MACEDONIA IS TRYING TO READJUST EVERY ASPECT OF ITS SOCIETY, AMONG WHICH THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS, TO THE EUROPEAN. THIS OVERWHELMING PROSPERITY IS EXPECTED TO BE ACHIEVED WHILE THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES, CAPACITIES AND EXPERIENCE ARE LIMITED. CONSEQUENTLY, THE AIM OF THIS THESIS IS EXAMINING THE CONTINUITY IN TRANSPORTATION DEVELOPMENT AND DETECTING THE WAYS IN WHICH THE TRANSPORTATION IN SKOPJE SHOULD BE AND CAN BE DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE SUSTAINABILITY IDEAL, GIVEN THE COUNTRY’S LIMITED CAPACITIES. THE RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED ON TWO LEVELS: THE CONCEPTUAL AND THE ACTUAL DEVELOPMENT, OUT OF WHICH, THE FORMER ILLUSTRATES THE GENESIS OF THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS ACCORDING TO THE PLANNED CONCEPTS AND THE CONTINUITY OF THE SYSTEM TRANSFORMATIONS EVOKED/ CHALLENGED BY VARIOUS REASONS, PREDOMINANTLY HISTORIC, WHILE THE LATTER- THE DYNAMICS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THOSE PLANS AND THE ACTUAL STATE OF CONSTRUCTION.
