CITIES IN-BETWEEN. PROSPECTS FOR KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY REGION IN MACEDONIA
FLANKED BETWEEN SEVERAL BALKAN METROPOLITAN REGIONS, THERE IS A GROUP OF SO-CALLED CITIES IN-BETWEEN THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED DEVELOPMENT IN RATHER CONFLICTIVE ENVIRONMENT. THESE CITIES ARE NEITHER LARGE NOR SMALL; NEITHER GLOBAL, NOR LOCAL; NEITHER FULLY CONNECTED, NOR MARGINAL, WHICH MAKES THEIR STATUS FAIRLY AMBIGUOUS. BEING SUCH URBAN AGGLOMERATION, THE METROPOLITAN REGION OF SKOPJE EMBODIES THE “FIGHT” OF THE EUROPEAN MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES TO GET A FAIR PLACE IN THE REGIONAL AND GLOBAL URBAN SYSTEM. MANY STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT CRUCIAL PREROGATIVE IN ACHIEVING THIS OBJECTIVE IS MAINTAINING STRONG BOND BETWEEN THE ECONOMY AND THE URBAN PLANNING. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE TWO ASPECTS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TWO-WAY, CAUSE – CONSEQUENCE INTERPLAY, WHICH DEPICTS THE UPS AND DOWNS OF ANY SOCIETY. THEREFORE, THE AIM OF THIS THESIS IS EXAMINING THE PROSPECTS OF SKOPJE TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN A STABLE AND PROGRESSIVE KNOWLEDGE BASED ECONOMY THAT WILL IMMANENTLY REFLECT ON THE QUALITY OF URBAN PLANNING. IN WHICH WAY THIS GOAL CAN BE ACHIEVED IS SEARCHED THROUGH SEVERAL STEPS: EVALUATION OF NUMBER OF INDICATORS THAT DEPICT THE SCORE OF THE CITY WITHIN KNOWLEDGE FOUNDATIONS; REVIEW OVER DIFFERENT ACTIONS AND POLICIES UNDERTAKEN BY VARIETY OF ACTORS AND CONSTRUCTING OWN COHERENT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY.

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IN SKOPJE. PRESENT SITUATION, TENDENCIES AND POSSIBILITIES FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
THE END OF THE LAST CENTURY AND THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW ONE WERE MARKED BY THE CITIES UNSUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PATTERN AND THE URGENT NEED FOR CHANGE. NUMEROUS NATIONAL DOCUMENTS AND POLICIES THAT WERE ADOPTED, DEMANDED REAL CHANGES IN EVERY SECTOR POLICIES AMONG WHICH IN THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR. IN RESULT, THE CITIES WORLDWIDE STARTED MODERNIZING AND REORGANIZING THEIR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASING URBAN POPULATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NEW IMPERATIVE- SUSTAINABILITY, FROM AN ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AS WELL AS ENVIRONMENTAL VIEWPOINT. FOLLOWING THE OVER-ENCOMPASSING GOAL TO JOIN THE EU, MACEDONIA IS TRYING TO READJUST EVERY ASPECT OF ITS SOCIETY, AMONG WHICH THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS, TO THE EUROPEAN. THIS OVERWHELMING PROSPERITY IS EXPECTED TO BE ACHIEVED WHILE THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES, CAPACITIES AND EXPERIENCE ARE LIMITED. CONSEQUENTLY, THE AIM OF THIS THESIS IS EXAMINING THE CONTINUITY IN TRANSPORTATION DEVELOPMENT AND DETECTING THE WAYS IN WHICH THE TRANSPORTATION IN SKOPJE SHOULD BE AND CAN BE DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE SUSTAINABILITY IDEAL, GIVEN THE COUNTRY’S LIMITED CAPACITIES. THE RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED ON TWO LEVELS: THE CONCEPTUAL AND THE ACTUAL DEVELOPMENT, OUT OF WHICH, THE FORMER ILLUSTRATES THE GENESIS OF THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS ACCORDING TO THE PLANNED CONCEPTS AND THE CONTINUITY OF THE SYSTEM TRANSFORMATIONS EVOKED/ CHALLENGED BY VARIOUS REASONS, PREDOMINANTLY HISTORIC, WHILE THE LATTER- THE DYNAMICS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THOSE PLANS AND THE ACTUAL STATE OF CONSTRUCTION.
